The CURVED set is Amazon Music UK’s platform for promoting artists by creating unique online content. Cambian assisted in the design of the unique immersive environment and then completed it’s production.

An Immersive Stage

Working from visual references including Cambian’s action sports projects, along with the specific requirement for a wooden aesthetic, LSD studio produced the concept design for this unique space. Akin to a large venetian blind floating above the finest quality skating bowl the world over.

The design interacts with the studio truss roof such that it becomes a part of the space, whilst the steel support integrated into the cantilevered front fascia gives the impression the set is floating and defying gravity.

Modular Off-site Production

The brief for construction included the requirement for the entire stage to be relocated to alternative studios in the future. To achieve this, a modular system was employed, which also facilitated the off-site production.

The lower part of the structure includes a compound curved surface, elliptical both on plan and in section. Self-jigging framework was produced in 24mm Birch Plywood, with two layers of 9mm Spruce Ply planking. The finished surface is formed of 6mm Birch Ply, with hardwearing lacquer. Particular attention to detail achieves the expressed details of the screw patterns.

The horizontal divide forms a light-box for the entire circumference. Laser cut and folded steel supports for the upper section are as minimal as possible to avoid shadows being cast on the lightbox facia. As a result, and also from practical install requirements, the upper section was produced to be as light as possible.

The facetted and slatted upper part of the structure was modulated to suit standard light lengths in the lightbox. The posts were fabricated and veneered for weight reduction, whilst giving the appearance of solid timber. The slats were produced from lightweight EPS and Poplar Plywood, with solid wood edging and concealed connectors.

Cambian’s team assembled the set over a four day period, initially levelling pads on all support locations to accommodate the changes in levels on the pre-existing cove beneath.
