Cambian Role:

Detailed Design, Off-site Production, Installation

Project Team:

Architects: Bowker Sadler || Main Contractor: Medlock FRB

The striking Plywood ceiling feature of Hello Oriental is designed to draw the eye into the basement restaurant. Cambian developed a unique system for execution of this complex feature, which we took from concept through to production and installation.

Organic Undulating Surface

Suspended below the stepped soffit, the Birch Plywood ribs combine to form an undulating and organic form.

Each of the 60 runs of ribs are derived from an intersection with the surface which defines this overall form. These are then subdivided equally in length such that the expressed joint details also flow organically across the space.

The suspension system is formed from a mixture of standard track system, industrial machine components, and custom laser cut bracketry.

The Plywood ribs are finished in FR lacquer and the supporting framework supplied in matt black to match the acoustic soffit coating.

Novel CAD Automation

Cambian developed a unique method for producing the detailed CAD model, where a single seed part contains all the design intent to define any of the 12,600 unique parts in the assembly.

A spreadsheet was then used to position and configure the seed part, enabling testing of connection detailed designs, before propagation to generate all of the components.

The associative and fully parametric model could be adjusted to cater for changes in the overall surface definition. This functionality was utilised when a 3D scan detected a clearance issue late in the project, requiring the update to hundreds of components.
